Setting the Hook

When a fish takes a fly, you seldom have more than two or three seconds to hook it before it ejects the fake food. You must react quickly to make the point of the hook penetrate the fish’s mouth. We call this setting the hook. Smaller and barbless hooks require less energy to hook most fish. Larger hooks require more energy or power even for the smaller fish.

Small flies (sizes 18 to 8) usually require finer leader tips to be most effective. Smaller hooks also require less energy to penetrate a fish’s mouth skin. The light-leader, small-hook strike is a quick movement up and back with the fly-rod tip—not a slow pull. This up-and-back movement hooks the fish and puts the rod in a position to absorb any excess pulls from you or the fish that might break the leader or tear the fly out of the fish’s mouth.
